Design Guide for Developers
This guide will assist developers, facilities managers and landlords improve the water efficiency of new build and existing stock.
The Water Efficiency Background section of this website provides detailed background information on water efficiency including the need for water efficiency, home buyer attitudes to water efficiency, an overview of the cost-benefit of water efficiency, developer interaction with water and waste water companies and schemes for measuring the water aspect of the sustainability of buildings.
The Regulations - Government Inentions and Policy Direction section contains a summary of current regulation and government intentions including The Building Regulations, the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, the Code for Sustainable Homes and how water efficiency is being taken beyond the regulatory minimum by local planning authorities.
The Whole Building Specifcation section provides information on how to specify a water-efficient building, including smart product specification and building design. It illustrates how to achieve water consumption specifications to meet targets set in the Code for Sustainable Homes and other schemes.
The Fittings and Appliances section is the ‘how to’ part of the website. It details the water using fittings, appliances and water saving technologies that are normally used in buildings. It also covers some aspects of outdoor water use. It lists water efficient products and links to manufacturer and supplier websites.
The Water Consumption Calculators section will contain and explain the water consumption calculators that are used to work up whole building specifications for water using fittings and appliances under the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Building Regulations
The Case Studies section provides case studies illustrating best practice examples of water efficient buildings both in terms of specification and use post occupation. It also provides some illustrations of where buildings specified as water efficient have failed to operate and such and attempts to address why.
